The PDES project provided technical
backstopping on crop-livestock interaction to farmers and research and
extension staff in the PDES project, an investment program sponsored by
the African Development Bank and the government of Burkina Faso. IFDC
and its partners have developed ISFM options (combining mineral
fertilizer and organic inputs) in collaboration with 50 farmers for
cowpea and millet.
In collaboration with the national
agricultural research institute, Institute for the Environment and
Agricultural Research (INERA), feed ratios for small ruminants
were validated with 21 farmers in 2003. Results were disseminated
through field visits, demonstration plots, training courses, and rural
workshops. The project is an important testing ground for IFDCs
activities on simulation modeling of mixed farming systems within the
Desert Margin Program.
