Economic and Policy Development Program:
IFDC’s
economic and policy development (EPD) program is
equipped with experience and expertise and has
offered assistance to various countries in the
following areas:
-
Market Assessment Studies: Developing and
transitional economies moved from public sector
monopolies to private sector-based input supply
systems. However, because such moves were not
equipped with the necessary capacity in the
private sector, in many economies input markets
remained underdeveloped and dysfunctional. The
EPD program has helped countries in developing
assessments of market conditions and preparing
projects to strengthen the functioning of input
markets.

- Policy Dialogue
and Advice: Distorted and non-conducive policy
environments have prevented the development of
agricultural sectors in many countries. EPD staff
members are involved in offering policy advice in
several areas including subsidies, trade reforms,
financial sector, and macropolicy issues.
- Policy and
Trade Studies: To offer sound and practical
advice, EPD conducts studies on policy and trade
issues related to agricultural subsidies, World
Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, environmental
protection, food security, and global fertilizer
industry outlook.
- Market
Intelligence: Information is key to development.
To keep the stakeholders informed about market
opportunities, the IFDC staff prepare fertilizer
outlook studies and maintain data about fertilizer
use and supply at all levels—global, regional, and
national.
- Project Design,
Development, and Support: Based on sound
analytical work, EPD helps in designing and
implementing projects on market development and
policy reforms.
