Geographic
Information for Sustainable Development
IFDC serves
as Secretariat for the USAID-funded project on
Geographic Information for Sustainable Development (GISD).
The GISD project brings together partners
from 14 separate projects being conducted in sub-Sarahan
Africa that use geographic information technologies
(remote sensing, global positioning
systems—GPS—geographic information systems
[GIS], and database management) to inventory natural
resources and formulate strategies for sustainable
development. IFDC facilitated the funding of the
projects, reporting of progress to USAID, the
participation of African partners in project
workshops in Bamako, Asmara, Nairobi, London, and
presentation of project results at the World Summit
for Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg,
South Africa, during 2002.
