The DERK II project is building the capacities of Mali’s agricultural sector, particularly the oilseed value chains (jatropha, sesame and shea butter), in the country’s Koulikoro region. Other agricultural products such as mangoes, dried cereals and henna are incorporated within the project. To assist farmer organizations, DERK II provides training, access to agro-inputs and product processing, packaging, transportation and marketing. The project also builds linkages to agro-dealers, financial institutions and import/export enterprises. The project is funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mali, and technical assistance is provided by the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) in Mali, with IFDC leading the implementation of the project.
IFDC, in coordination with SNV, is working with a local partner, the Regional Agricultural Chamber of Koulikoro, to build agricultural capacity in Koulikoro. The effort targets farmer-based organizations (FBOs), and the farmers within these groups. DERK II is developing marketing strategies and business partnerships, implementing quality control systems and seeking new opportunities for agricultural niche markets. To further assist farmers, the project improves access to commercial credit, the supply of agro-inputs (quality fertilizers, advanced seed varieties and crop protection products), equipment, research institutions and certification services. Training and technology transfer are also key. Under DERK II, programs have been designed to educate farmers in appropriate agricultural technology adoption and practice.
The program continues to expand the capacities of these FBOs, and groups of FBOs, known as unions. DERK II provides greater access to product transformation activities such as processing and packaging. Product transportation and marketing techniques have also been enhanced. The project builds FBO influence in value chain decision-making and governmental affairs – organizing a collective voice for negotiation, advocacy and lobbying.
To further enhance the agricultural value chain, DERK II supports enterprise development and management, applying sound financial management principles and introducing transparency and appropriate governance practices.
