Special
Recognition of IFDC by Farm Chemicals International
Muscle Shoals,
Alabama (U.S.A.)--The November 1999—Special Millennium
Issue—of Farm Chemicals International gave special recognition to
IFDC, Dr. Norman Borlaug, and late Mr. Travis Hignett. IFDC and Dr.
Borlaug were selected as two of the top 10 people and organizations
that shaped world agriculture during the past century. Mr. Hignett
and Dr. Borlaug were listed among the top 10 influencers that shaped
20th century agriculture. A photograph of IFDC scientists
was included in the "Global Photo Review of the Century."
The special issue
of Farm Chemicals International states that "IFDC was created
in 1974, during a period when global fertilizer and energy shortages
had combined with rising agricultural input prices to create a food
supply crisis situation for many developing countries. IFDC has
become a global center of excellence, with expertise in fertilizers
to service the needs of developing countries."
In recognizing Dr.
Norman Borlaug, an IFDC Board member, FCI names him "a key
individual in the ‘Green Revolultion," who combined
agricultural research and practical humanitarianism through plant
breeding that boosted yields in developing countries and won him the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1970." Further the journal states that
Borlaug is often called the "Father of the Green
Revolution." He developed high-yielding wheat varieties that
spurred food production to outpace the growth of human population.
In 1997, the Atlantic Monthly magazine said of this 1970 Nobel Prize
winner: "The form of agriculture that Borlaug preaches may have
prevented a billion deaths."
In recognizing Mr.
Travis P. Hignett, the journal points out that "Key to
fertilizer research in the 20th Century have been the
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the International Fertilizer
Development Center (IFDC), and Travis P. Hignett was the common
thread to both. The "Father of Fertilizer Technology"
served for 35 years at TVA, was a special consultant at IFDC, and
updated the Fertilizer Manual—a definitive work explaining major
fertilizer-manufacturing processes."
